A detailed essay plan for KS3 looking at suspense in The Red Room. Can be used as an assessment piece. Could be used at the end of the topic as it assumes that some work has been done on character, setting and language. Students should use the bullet points to help them write PEE paragraphs. Resource consists of one essay plan.

An 19 slide PPT which has been written as a revision guide for the structure question (q3) in Paper 1 of AQA's GCSE English Language spec. There is a focus on what examiners are looking for as well as handy hints throughout. I look at what is meant by structure and look at what examiners are looking for when marking this question. A simplified marks scheme is given so that pupils can track progression. An example of a level 1 paragraph is also given with a tasks to decide why it is a level 1 and for it to be rewritten and improved. The PPT uses the 2017 'Rosabel' paper as a basis. The revision guide contains activities which can be done at home or in the classroom. The PPT has been designed for either teachers to share in the classroom as part of pupils' revision and/or as a document for pupils to take home. Also available from my shop is a similar guide for question 2 of the same paper.

'The Soldier' assessment

Assessment preparation and feedback lesson for ‘The Soldier’ - HOW DOES BROOKES PRESENT WAR? This resource contains material for at least three lessons. It was designed for the fourth out of five sets (predicted grades mainly 3s) and was written for an assessment. The first lesson sees pupils completing a revision sheet using previous teaching/knowledge and shows how to attempt a poetry assessment. The second lesson is the assessment itself after an 10 minute starter which focuses on ways in which war is presented. The third lesson is for after the marking and is a ppt designed to help pupils improve and re-draft.

Holes - chapter 1

A critical reading lesson using chapter 1 of Holes. The lesson was written for an intervention lesson but could also be used for a lower ability class. The lesson encourages careful and slow reading; a look at vocabulary; zooming in of specific words and sentences to help with general understanding and then a longer writing task looking at how the author conveys the atmosphere. Included is also the worksheet which my pupils do their writing on.

The second lesson in my Literacy series aimed at LA KS3. This week looks at common, collective and abstract nouns to give pupils a greater understanding of the language they use. Activities are both collaborative and independent and I include the worksheet that I use with my groups. Good for intervention or general Literacy lessons.

Literacy Series: 1. Sentences

(0)
The first lesson in a series of weekly Literacy lessons that I teach to LA students. The lesson begins with looking at what a sentence is with the necessary components before moving on to look at how we can make our sentences more interesting. I use a worksheet for students to complete their work on and this is also included.
Literacy Series: 3. Adjectives

Literacy Series: 3. Adjectives

The third lesson in my Literacy series which looks at adjectives an how they help us understand the text. I use predominantly with LA KS3. I have found that this lesson can be spread over two sessions if a slower-pace is needed. The lesson looks at how adjectives can enhance nouns and goes onto look at how we can show our understanding of a text by identifying adjectives and creating synonyms. A worksheet for students to write their work down is also included.
